Letter to the editor: Don't cut police

By Mary Payton, Tulsa - 11/7/2009

I am disappointed with the decision to get rid of the horses and helicopters and reduce the number of police for the people's protection. I feel we should be finding a way to increase the number with all the gangs and crime in Tulsa. Once we get rid of the trained officers and horses it will be a bigger cost to replace them when you realize what a big mistake it was.

This letter was published exclusively online.

The Tulsa World publishes as many letters as possible within its standards and space limitations. The newspaper receives many more letters than it can publish. To help accommodate that surplus some letters are published online only. Letters that can't be edited below the 250-word limit on printed letters or that are written by an author who has published a letter in the past 30 days are often used online only. The newspaper also emphasizes local topics in printed letters. Letters addressing national or international events are often used online.

How about the police actually pay attention to gangs, crimes against persons and significant property crimes rather than hiding behind bushes to nab speeders? OTOH, how do you define a group of people with common interest to include crips/bloods/23rd st maulers, etc but to exclude the VFW and the Boy Scouts?

how about asking parents to do their jobs and raise their kids not to be in gangs. problem solved. gangs recruit at very young ages, so i say up to age 18, hold the guardians of an minors involved in crimes responsible. they too should be held criminally responsible for any crimes committed by minors they are responsible for. perhaps then they would start properly parenting and controlling their kids.
