DEWEY Fifth-ranked Berryhill defeated Dewey 25-6 in District 3A-3 action Friday night at Bulldogger Stadium.

The Chiefs (8-2 overall, 6-1 district) grabbed the runner-up spot in the district with the win. They will host a first-round playoff game Friday.

Despite the loss, the Bulldoggers (6-4, 4-3) also qualify for the postseason.

They will play at Metro Christian in the opening round.

"This was a big win," Berryhill head coach Pat Harper said. "Dewey has a good football team. We wanted to get that home game next week."

Berryhill controlled the ball effectively, churning out 309 yards on the ground and running 71 total plays on offense.

"We started out trying to be physical and run right at them," Harper said. "It was working so we stayed with it. We did a good job of scoring when we needed to."

Dewey, on the other hand, had just 38 offensive plays. The Berryhill defense held the Bulldoggers to 114 yards of total offense, six first downs and forced two turnovers.

"The defense has stepped up all year and did so tonight also," Harper said.

Berryhill's Andy Morgan and Tyler Johnson both eclipsed 100 yards and had one TD each. Morgan gained 124 yards on 20 carries, while Johnson had 116 yards on 23 carries.

Berryhill scored first with 9:02 left in the second quarter, courtesy of a 30-yard TD run by Morgan. That score came 65 seconds after Tyler Brown intercepted a pass at the Chiefs' 40-yard line.

Berryhill scored again on its next drive. The 11-play, 73-yard march was capped with Brown's 29-yard scoring strike to Cameron Young at the 2:35 mark of the second quarter.

Berryhill also had other scoring opportunities early — its first possession ended with a lost fumble at the Dewey 4. A holding penalty also wiped out a 70-yard run from Johnson.

Johnson's 3-yard rushing TD gave Berryhill a 19-0 lead with 2:19 left in the third.

Dewey's Colby Ramsey returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a score to narrow the gap to 19-6 just 15 seconds later.

The Chiefs came right back with another long scoring drive. Joe Alston finished things off with a 1-yard plunge.
