Trick plays big lift for Oologah

COLLINSVILLE — Josh Collier led Oologah to a 16-6 win Friday over rival Collinsville in a game with huge playoff implications for District 4A-3.

Collier carried 37 times for 150 yards and a touchdown to spark No. 8 Oologah (7-3, 6-1 in District 4A-3).

"I normally get tired at the end of games. But with this being a rivalry game, I had a little extra," said Collier, a junior. "We wanted to get this victory so bad because of the rivalry and for our seniors to give them the best chance to advance in the playoffs."

With the win, the Mustangs finish second in the district and play at home in the first round of the playoffs. Collinsville finishes fourth and will play on the road.

Oologah was not having as much success rushing the ball in the first half, so coach Brandon Craig reached into his bag of tricks.

On Oologah's first possession of the second half, the Mustangs ran a flea-flicker when Collier pitched back to quarterback Alec Brunson, who found a streaking Ryan Swindell for a 47-yard gain.

On its next possession, Oologah ran a double reverse, but Swindell pitched the ball back to Brunson. He launched the ball downfield and found Ryan Kirkendall for a 47-yard gain to the Collinsville 3.

"We'd been working on those plays all week, and we called them at the right time," Craig said.

Both plays led to touchdowns and put Oologah ahead 16-0 at the end of the third quarter.

"Those trick plays opened us up in the running game," Collier said.

Collier combined with Brunson and Swindell for 230 yards on 54 carries.

"We have a great high school offensive line," Craig said.

Collinsville (6-4, 4-3 in District 4A-3) scored after a punt bounced off an Oologah player and was returned to the 3-yard line. Two plays later, Merin Oakley scored on a 3-yard run.

Oakley led Collinsville with 44 yards on 16 carries.

The Collinsville defense kept the Cardinals in the game early. They stuffed Oologah on a fourth down on its first drive. On their second drive, Oologah settled for a 22-yard field goal and 3-0 lead.
