Rams fall in finale to Stillwater
By JOHN DEJARNETT World Correspondent - 11/7/2009
OWASSO — Stillwater and Owasso struggled to move the ball, but the Pioneers mustered just enough.
Stillwater used a 16-play, 70-yard drive that wiped away most of the third quarter, while at the same time wiping away a three-point Owasso lead. With just seconds left in the third, Pioneer quarterback Jerame Littell found a wide-open Trevor Davenport in the middle of the end zone. That lone touchdown propelled Stillwater over No. 7 Owasso 7-3 in the regular-season finale for both schools in a District 6A-4 matchup at Owasso Stadium.
"This win was good for the senior kids," said Stillwater head coach Rusty Atkins. "It's a huge win to build off for next year."
Owasso had already locked up second place in 6A-4, and thus a home game next week in the opening round of the playoffs. Owasso will face Bartlesville in the playoff opener.
Nevertheless, head coach Bill Patterson was upset with the way his team played.
"This is very disappointing," he said.
The Pioneers (5-5, 4-3) had 76 total yards before the long drive. But after beginning at their own 30, they quickly moved into Owasso territory.
The most pivotal aspect of the drive was fourth-down conversions. Three times, the Pioneers were successful on fourth down, converting a fourth-and-2, and consecutive fourth-and-3s.
Littell completed 4-of-5 passes for 42 yards, and the go-ahead touchdown on the drive. The sophomore went 9-of-10 for 77 yards and a touchdown in the second half.
"We needed to get the ball moving in the second half," Atkins said. "And he was fortunate enough to find some people that got open."
Owasso (6-4, 5-2) never had the ball enough in the second half to get anything going. The Rams ran only four offensive plays in the third quarter, as their first drive netted only 3 yards and a punt.
The fourth play went for negative yardage. Owasso accumulated 1 yard in the third period.
The Rams snapped the ball 11 more times on offense the rest of the game, but managed only 17 yards on those plays.
Owasso opened a 3-0 advantage on a 20-yard field goal by Alex Fonseca with 17 seconds left in the opening quarter. Quarterback Joe Lindsey was effective running the ball, carrying 13 times for 89 yards in the first half.

ordinary joe your son must plays defense or doesn't play at all

Coach Patterson you need to be ashamed at the performance of the offense. They were not prepared for this game mentally or physically. The offense is one dimensional and very predictable. The defense did great as usual but they were tired. They spent the whole third quarter on the field, no defense can stop an offense indefinitely unless its the Ram offense. If you are going to have any chance at all with Bartlesville you better get your team motivated.

Observations from the game: - QB Lindsey looked very good early keeping the football for long gains, however, after a steady dose of this, Stillwater began to shut him and the entire offense down. - OU commit Aaron Colvin was non-existent and how he doesn't touch the ball more on offense continues to amaze. He played a big role in turning the offense around when Lindsey and Spurgeon were out but now he's been relegated to a bit player once again. Just boggles the mind. - Owasso had a WR that was sporting a cast on his hand that looked like an "over-sized framing hammer". Seriously? - Once Owasso was down they had to start throwing, and that was the game. Make them throw and it's reminiscent of the "Keystone Cops" as everyone runs in different directions not having a clue where the ball will be delivered. Smith (Bartlesville) and Fredrich (Union) had Owasso moving forward with a balanced offense while they were here that could actually compete against more talented teams. Patterson has taken the program back to the mid-80's with his rush offense which works against the majority of inferior 6A-4 teams but against teams of equal or more talent fails miserably. Only fitting that Smith brings his Bruins to Owasso next week and the outcome will be grim for Ram fans.
