Indians rout Locust Grove, finish third in 4A-3

CATOOSA — A stingy defense has been the constant this season in Catoosa's run at its first district title in 30 years.

But in the team's regular-season finale on Friday night, the Indians' offense more than did its part.

Sophomore running backs Levi Browning and Cole Scheulen combined for 270 yards rushing and five touchdowns and Catoosa (7-3 overall, 6-1 district) amassed 455 yards of total offense in rolling to a 56-6 District 4A-3 triumph against winless Locust Grove at Frank McNabb Field.

Despite the Indians' victory, Oologah and Jay also won, forcing a three-way tie for first. The Indians lost the tiebreaker and finish third in the standings. They will travel to Broken Bow for next week's first-round playoff game.

Scheulen finished with a game-high 136 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of 38, 22, and 20 yards.

Meanwhile, Browning netted 134 yards on the ground on 13 attempts and scored on TD jaunts of 38 and 15 yards.

The duo helped the Indians compile 412 yards rushing on 54 carries.

"We're young on offense with most of our seniors on the defensive side," Catoosa head coach Aaron Meier said.

"We felt that if we could control the ball on offense and our defense could keep us in games that, by the end of the season we would get better and make a run," Meier said.

The Indian defense turned in another stellar performance, allowing Locust Grove (0-10, 0-7) just 90 total yards and five first downs.

Of those totals, 72 yards and four first downs came on the Pirates' final possession of the game when Locust Grove drove 72 yards for its only points as Tyler Fox raced to the end zone from 13 yards out.

The Catoosa defense did not surrender a first down until 5:52 remained in the third quarter while forcing seven turnovers.

Catoosa intercepted five passes with Ty Rainey and Brode Gray snaring two apiece. Gray also recovered a fumble.

Browning and Scheulen notched a TD each as Catoosa raced to a 28-0 cushion by halftime.

Andy Johnson added an 11-yard scoring run in the opening half while quarterback Chris Morgan teamed up with Michael Gordon on a 23-yard TD pass.

Ben Doyle tallied Catoosa's eighth and final rushing TD of the night on a 24-yard burst in the fourth quarter for a 56-0 Indian advantage.
