Insurance, donations help cover costs for Duncan baby’s care
By VALLERY BROWN NewsOK.com - 11/7/2009
DUNCAN — Kayden Ward has known the kind touch of helping hands his whole life. This week, his family felt it too.
Kayden’s parents and grandmother learned Tuesday that SoonerCare will cover compression suits to ease swelling caused by his congenital vascular lymphedema. Paperwork was being finalized Friday to pay for the garments that cost as much as $3,500 each. The family also received nearly $3,000 in donations from across the country to help Kayden.
The family was concerned about whether the garments would be covered. This week they found out the costs will be more expensive than they had originally thought.
The suits will cost about $14,000 per month.

Good money after bad Finally Debt Free states. The way I see it is good money trying to help a child in desperate need. How can anyone weigh the quality of life of a child against the value of money.

007: The democrats healthcare bill will deem this as unnecessary and not pay for it.

This is a sad sad story and I truely feel for the mother. However, $14,000 per month is just the tip of the iceberg for the taxpayer's burden. How many months will we be saddled with this, before the inevitable happens. Again, it is truely sad, but you need to know when to stop throwing good money after bad.

I'm glad little Kayden is getting the care he needs. The cost is outrageous which is probably what they charge without insurance. I always found this ridiculous because they are quite lower on contracts with insurance companies. This is part of the problem.

I am glad the baby is getting the care and what the baby needs. All some of you think about is greed money and dems and repubs. How about just a little compassion. Clean your mind.

"Kayden’s parents and grandmother learned Tuesday that SoonerCare will cover compression suits to ease swelling" Oh wait til the republicans in the state house find about this, they will put a stop to this in a heart beat. But then again they are pro life as long as they don't have to pay for it.

okierose and Mar well what do you think sooner care is. It's a state funded health care plan [welfare]. It's pure socialism. Okie style

Another example of the failure to accept personal responsibility pervasive in Oklahoma. Responsible parents would grow up, probably marry, certainly get a job and buy insurance before reproducing. How many years will we, the taxpayers, ante up to pay for the failure of these parents to act responsibly?

The real question is: If SoonerCare didn't cover it, would the manufacturer offer them for free or at a discount? I'm happy that the child will get the care he needs, but I can't help but think that our tax dollars are ultimately lining a company's profits.

Ooo - "Snap", 007 - Well said!

The reason health care costs are skyrocketing is government interference in the health care and insurance markets. It's the same with everything government tries to manage - costs rise and quality and availabilty decrease. It doesn't matter whether it is Medicaid, the Post Office, Amtrak, or the Defense Dept. Government is the antithesis of efficiency. 007, charity and compassion are only possible if they are freely given. When government forces someone to give up the fruits of their labor to someone else, that is the definition of slavery. I cannot understand how liberal politicians can be called generous and compassionate, when it is not their own money they dole out. They are a bunch of hypocrites.
