Man who fled from police, was shot at, is in custody

A man was in custody late Friday, hours after a Tulsa police officer shot at him while trying to arrest him at a car wash near 93rd Street and Sheridan Road earlier Friday.

The man, identified as Zachary Labadie, tried to run over an officer with a car during the attempted arrest, and police fired at him as he fled about 3 p.m., police reported.

Officers searched into the evening Friday for Labadie, whom they were trying to arrest on warrants when the events escalated.

After he was shot at, Labadie drove south on Sheridan and crashed his vehicle near 6700 E. 97th St., where he got out and ran away, Officer Leland Ashley said.

A woman was in the car with Labadie when he took off on foot. She was uninjured and is cooperating with detectives, police said.

Information about how Labadie was taken into custody was not available late Friday.

After the incident, buses at Jenks East Elementary School, near 91st Street and Harvard Avenue, were held at the school out of precaution.

The students later were allowed to leave.

The Tulsa Chapter of the American Red Cross is providing services to a family of nine after a fire destroyed part of their home Friday.

The two adults and seven children were at home when the fire started about 4:30 p.m., but no one was injured, Oakhurst Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ruben Morris said.

Morris said he thinks the fire was started by a gas wall heater.

Oakhurst firefighters contained the damage to a front room and kitchen, he said.

CLAREMORE — A Claremore man who intended to "scare" his cousin by pointing a gun at him while the pair were drinking was charged Friday with second-degree murder in the cousin's death, authorities said.

Preston Adam Dohrer, 21, is charged in the slaying of Michael David Duke, 20, who died of a gunshot to the head, according to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Tulsa.

Authorities discovered Duke's body about 1:45 a.m. Oct. 24 in the living room at Dohrer's home, records show.

Dohrer reportedly told police he shot Duke accidentally. Assistant Police Chief Stan Brown said the two were cousins.

Dohrer told police he intended to point the 9 mm pistol at Duke and pull the trigger on an empty chamber, but the gun fired, police reports show.

A witness told officers that Dohrer and Duke were "playing around with each other" and playing with knives.

The witness said Dohrer went to his bedroom and returned with a handgun, which he pointed at Duke and fired once.

STILLWATER — Authorities are pursuing a vandalism case against a group of men who are accused of defacing an iconic building at Oklahoma State University.

Police said the men — three students and a nonstudent — carved their initials into an exterior archway at Old Central on Oct. 31. Their names were not available.

The men were not arrested at the time, but campus police are filing affidavits with the Payne County District Attorney's Office, Capt. Richard Atkins said. Charges of destruction of public property are possible, he said.

Old Central is more than 100 years old and recently was renovated after decades of use as a higher education museum. It now houses the school's honors college.

The group apparently walked into a construction zone and carved the letters into a stone archway at the front entrance. Work crews are still finishing exterior work on the building, Atkins said.

Atkins said he didn't have a damage estimate, but the vandalism appears to be repairable.
