Letter to the editor: Remember veterans

By Thomas Miller, Sand Springs - 11/5/2009

As a proud Vietnam veteran who is preparing for Veterans Day, I find it tragic that so many of my fellow Americans view Nov. 11 as just another day off work.

I lost friends in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I made a promise to their families that they would never, ever be forgotten. With wars on two fronts — and the VA workload topping 1 million claims — it's time for all Americans to remember the true meaning of Veterans Day.

I hope everyone in our area will remember what Veterans Day is all about. Call one of our local VFW Posts to take part in our ceremonies. And as we near the holidays, please keep our deployed troops and their families in your prayers. Send a care package or donate to a program that supports our troops and veterans, such as VFW Operation Uplink, www.operationuplink.org.

Always remember those who have fought for your freedom.

Only Veterans should get that day off. That would bring the most attention to the significance of the day.

"Only Veterans should get that day off. That would bring the most attention to the significance of the day." Great suggestion, QLC. Would that it take legs.

QLC: email to Senator Inhofe for whatever it might be worth. Senator, amidst today’s online (Tulsa World) discussion of the observance of Veterans’ Day was this comment: “Only Veterans should get that day off. That would bring the most attention to the significance of the day.” As a veteran yourself and long-time member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, perhaps you could breath some official life into this? Thank you. USAF Ret., DAV

We can't depend upon the likes of Inhofe or Coburn to care one bit about the veterans except to use them for their own publicity. If we want any recognition, we have to do it for ourselves. We need a "day without a veteran".

You have mine and my family’s deepest respect and appreciation for your service to our country. Remembering is the very least we all can do.

calloy, I, too, would hold up a bill that was slam full of BS spending that has nothing whatever to do with the DoD, veterans, veterans, affairs, etc... It's a defense bill, get it?

Good letter, Thomas Miller. Military service is an honorable duty that should be honored.

I will, Thomas. Unfortunately, many many Americans do not get a day off work to participate in the celebrations of remembrance.

If only veterans get that day off then we know that Obama will be working. Couldn't let that go. After 8 years and the Gulf War I'll take the day off.
