Letter to the editor: Adelson's qualifications
By Connie Seibold, Tulsa - 11/4/2009
It appears that the attention paid to the Tulsa mayoral race has been focused on negative TV ads. We don't watch much television, but Dewey Bartlett Jr. definitely leads in negative glossy mailers. Shouldn't we be primarily concerned about the qualifications of the two major candidates? Tom Adelson has been an active partner in a family-owned oil and gas business, as well as practicing law. He served as Gov. Brad Henry's Secretary of Health, successfully fighting for passage of Oklahoma's first Clean Air Act.
As a state senator, Adelson has successfully worked with Republicans and Democrats for the benefit of Tulsa, as well as the entire state. For example, he was instrumental in preserving the Oklahoma State University-Tulsa hospital teaching program. This hospital trains new doctors, provides medical care for people without insurance and reduces the financial burden on other city hospitals.
Adelson is aware that companies, such as IBM, which provide good jobs are more interested in infrastructure (including affordable health care) than in tax breaks.
Serving as mayor of Tulsa is basically a non-partisan position. Skills in negotiation and attracting responsible employers, as well as awareness of the needs of both business community and families, should be the primary criteria for electing this very important official.
Letters to the editor are encouraged. Each letter must be signed and include an address and a telephone number where the writer can be reached during business hours. Addresses and phone numbers will not be published. Letters should be a maximum of 250 words to be considered for publication and may be edited for length, style and grammar. Hobbs, I've met him too and he's an empty suit if I ever saw one. My opinion. Connie, As far as the negative TV ads go Adelson got Barlett beat two to one, don't know about the flyers. Just wonder though is that why you said you don't watch much television? Trying to use a little spin there are you Connie?

I've met Adleson on several occasions and he is a stand up guy. He was a outstanding State Senator and I would have rather he run for Governor...but his loyalty is obviously to Tulsa. I've missed all of the negative adds being in Colorado, but the trash ads have to be dealt with and I'm sure seeing the republican strategy of carpet bombing you opponet. I'm positive Adleson's stategy was to answer in kind.

It seems like politicians inevitably go negative,i think it's because they hire campaign mangers and ad guys to tell them how to run a campaign.

Aldelson has devoted his life to public service. He has defended those who were vicitms of predatory lenders and teaches on a volunteer basis in School. He is a fine man and the best candidate - I hope he wins!

Most politicians are stand up people, until they get elected.

Hobbs, I have never met him but I agree from looking at his past.

The letter would have been much more effective without the first 3 sentences. "He's more negative than..." is also negative campaigning itself, when tied to active promotion of another candidate.
