Officials: More than 40 Booker T. Washington student-athletes ineligible
Booker T. Washington has added a familiar face to its staff in the wake of a scandal involving the use of more than 40 ineligible student-athletes.
The school has hired former basketball coach Mike Mims as its new assistant principal over athletics, Tulsa Public Schools announced today. Mims coached the Hornets from 1972-1982 and won three state championships at Booker T. Washington. He also famously coached basketball legend Wayman Tisdale in high school.
Mims followed Tisdale to the University of Oklahoma, where he served as an assistant coach under Billy Tubbs for 13 years.
TPS also announced that baseball coaches John Potocnik and Jason Doctor will take over as co-athletic directors. They will fill in for Antwain Jimmerson, who was suspended as athletic director and head football coach after a district investigation found eligibility questions surrounding six student-athletes this year. Potocnik has been the school's baseball coach for almost 12 years, and Doctor has served there for almost two.
Booker T. Washington, the defending Class 5A state champions in football, forfeited one game — its win over Miami — today for using 16 players who were academically ineligible, including seven starters. It also forfeited two games last month for using a player who was not eligible because of recruiting violations.
The volleyball team has forfeited four matches, including its regional championship and win over Tahlequah in the state tournament, for using players who were academically ineligible. The school will return its regional championship plaque and has been placed on warning by the district.
The district announced that 37 academically ineligible players were used this season.
