Eight straight for BA band

The 6A state marching band championship appears to have found a semi- permanent home in Broken Arrow, judging by the school's eighth straight title.

On Saturday in Edmond, the Pride of Broken Arrow High School marching band won its eighth consecutive Oklahoma Bandmasters Association State Marching Band Championship along with other honors.

The state championship is the 10th for the band in the past 12 years, and the Pride also earned the 2009 OBA competition awards for outstanding musical performance, outstanding visual performance and outstanding general effect.

"It was exciting to see how the Pride has continued to improve over the course of this entire season," Pride Director Darrin Davis said. "The performance by our members was exceptional, particularly in the finals competition."

The band will be part of the Bands of America Grand Nationals, which run from Nov. 11 through Nov. 14 in Indianapolis, Ind.

"There is little doubt that the 2009 Pride may be one of the best bands we've ever seen in Broken Arrow," Davis said. "Our production of 'Rite of the Raptor' is one of the most unique shows that Broken Arrow has ever produced, and to see the show score that well — even though we're only performing about 90 percent of the completed production — is really amazing. With only two weeks left in our season, the Pride looks to roll into the Bands of America Grand National Championship with excellent momentum."

The band's sendoff to nationals dress rehearsal will begin at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Broken Arrow High School stadium, 1901 E. Albany St.

The community is invited to attend the show with admission being nonperishable and canned food items that will benefit Broken Arrow Neighbors.
