Election results go high-tech
By RANDY KREHBIEL World Staff Writer - 11/4/2009
Real-time results from next week's municipal elections will be available online and through social networking providers Twitter and Facebook, it was announced Tuesday.
"We are very excited about this opportunity," said Tulsa County Election Board Secretary Patty Bryant. "We're trying to bridge the gap between the state election board system from the late 1980s and early 1990s to the tools available now."
"We have an excellent election board one of the best, if not the best, in the state," said County Commissioner Fred Perry. "But, it has come to our attention that we are not the speediest. There are reasons for that, but we've come up with some work-arounds."
As returns are received, they will be manually entered into the Tulsa County Web site and displayed in PDF format. The county Web site can be accessed at

.
Return updates will also be distributed through Twitter and Facebook, officials said.
In addition, Perry said wireless Internet has been installed at the Tulsa County Election Board, 555 N. Denver Ave., for use by visitors and the media.
Bryant emphasized the returns posted online will be preliminary.
"This is really a great day for us," said Election Board Assistant Secretary Shelly Boggs. "We knew our antiquated system was not what it needed to be. Now, for the first time in the state of Oklahoma, citizens will be able to get local election results as soon as they are received."
