Video: Buns and Roses rocks sandwiches without music

Michelle Goldstein swears her late Grandma Rose still is around keeping an eye on things at Goldstein's new Buns and Roses deli in downtown Tulsa.
"Things fall off shelves and stuff like that, and I know it's her," Goldstein said.
Surely there is a ghost of a chance Goldstein is correct. The deli is dedicated to her grandparents, Rose and Izak Faland and Gloria and Jack Goldstein, with a particular nod to the grandmothers.
"Grandpa Jack always called Gloria 'Honey Bun,' so us kids grew up calling her Bun," Goldstein said. "I remember years ago my stepdad saying if we ever had a restaurant we should call it Buns and Roses after the grandmothers. Some people think it's from the rock band, but that's not true. I'm actually a big Beatles fan."
Goldstein said Grandma Bun and Grandpa Jack owned a bakery in Texas, other relatives have bakeries and delis on the East Coast and in Toronto, Canada, and her parents worked for many years at locations in the Steak & Ale chain, including Tulsa, Houston, Nashville and Dallas.
"I've tried to do some other things, but nothing ever felt right except the restaurant business," said Goldstein, who has worked at Outback Steakhouse, Joe's Crab Shack, Texas Roadhouse, Charleston's and Panera Bread since moving here in 2001 to go to school. "It has been a childhood dream to have my own place."
She said her mother and stepfather, Esther and Jeff Brown, and father Jay also have been supportive in the new venture.
Buns and Roses offers a variety of breakfast items, such as panini, burritos, muffins and bagels, ranging from 69 cents to $2.69. Breakfast is served 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and lunch items continue until 3 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Diners may choose from soups, sandwiches and wraps, or put together their own sandwich from a long list of meats, cheeses, vegetables, dressings, bread and tortilla wraps.
Build-your-own sandwiches are $6.49 and include chips and a drink.
We selected items from the "B&R Specials" section of the menu — Grandpa Max's turkey avocado club and Grandma Rosie's roast beef (both $6.75 with chips and drink), along with sides of hummus and tabouli (99 cents each).
Both sandwiches were outstanding. The roast beef, rolled in a spinach tortilla, included crumbled blue cheese, lettuce, tomato and horseradish sauce, and I loved the interaction between the blue cheese and horsey sauce in this combination.
The turkey avocado club featured smoked turkey, sliced avocados, Swiss cheese, alfalfa sprouts, bacon, tomato and deli mustard on wheatberry bread.
In this one it was the Swiss cheese and avocados that do-si-doed together to make a surprisingly flavorful duo.
The garlicky hummus was thick, almost like a paste, and on the dry side, but the presence of a couple of garbanzo beans was evidence it was made in the Buns and Roses kitchen.
The tabouli leaned to the bulgur (cracked wheat) side dotted with bits of parsley, cucumber and tomato.
"I like to put a little spin on some of the sandwiches," Goldstein said. "For instance, I make the Reuben with a bistro sauce that has a little kick to it."
She also offers weekly specials with such items as meatball subs and Hawaiian chicken melt.
The spacious dining area has 18 tables and plenty of room for more.
A private room has seating for eight around a granite-like table and is dedicated to Goldstein's brother, Seth, a captain and flight instructor in the Marines. Photos of Seth decorate the walls.
"Since we are so close to the courthouse we've had attorneys have lunch meetings in that room," Goldstein said.
Buns and Roses is in the Manhattan Building, and large windows look out to Fifth Street where the main entrance is located. Another entrance is on Boulder Avenue.
The restaurant, which opened Aug. 26, accepts all major credit cards.
