Six tips to fine sips
By MATT GLEASON World Scene Writer - 9/24/2009
Mark Stenner runs a local wine tasting group. Its mission, as Stenner said, is "to educate Tulsans about the joys of wine as an everyday accompaniment to meals."
Stenner recently offered a few local places to grab a fine glass of wine.
Fleming's Prime Steakhouse
1976 Utica Square
"A great, great — and eclectic — wine list, with many tastes unique to our market. I love the ambience, the service is second to none, and the food is incredible. The tasting flight options means you can try a lot of wines over the course of an evening, with small pours of each, great for finding a new favorite to enjoy. Fleming's does everything right, every single time."
KEO
3524 S. Peoria Ave.
"Although I go here for the food, I really dig the bar and the wine list. Every experience here has been top notch and I often bring out of town guests to eat and drink here. KEO has a great list of white wines, including a Vouvray from Champalou — a slightly off-dry Chenin Blanc that is to die for — that complements the superb food perfectly. The food prices are a steal, as are the wines by the glass."
The Local Table
4329 S. Peoria Ave.
"I'm a bar dweller, being English, and I love to hang out in the bar at the LT. The wine list isn't long, but there isn't a weak bottle on it, which I like. I especially enjoy Sundays with half-priced wines and great sliders from the bar menu. In these cost-conscious times I can eat well, split a bottle of wine over a long afternoon or evening, and do so at a very reasonable cost."
Lucky's
1536 E. 15th St.
"The 20 wines for $20 is a neat idea and certainly makes the bill at the end of the evening easier to digest. Some delicious dishes on the menu pair well with said wines. Again, this is a place where I prefer to eat in the bar, rather than the main restaurant. The wines are served in good stemware, and always at the appropriate temperature."
Lola's at the Bowery
5 E. Brady St.
"I love, love, love the ambience at this unique restaurant. There is something about the place that is just so inviting and welcoming. The wine list is not long, but the wines fit the menu, and the prices are very reasonable. You can get a great Malbec for $22 a bottle and a sublime Shiraz for $28. You can't beat that."
Biga
4329 S. Peoria Ave.
"I'm a big fan of Biga for the food and atmosphere. They've done a great job of making the place feel authentic, have a great and loyal staff. Best of all is an excellent wine list that doesn't break the bank. As well as a range of good reds, there are some really interesting white wines that are priced sensibly."
